YULEE, Fla. -- Ben McCorkel of Yulee remembers his experience with the King of Pop like it was yesterday.
McCorkel was a deputy sheriff with the Nassau County Sheriff's Office in 1984 when Jackson came to town. Jacksonville was one of many stops on Michael Jackson's Victory tour in 1984.
McCorkel said he was assigned as a driver for Jackson when he came in from the airport. He drove Jackson from the airport and to his hotel in Fernandina Beach.
McCorkel got an autograph and took some photos with Jackson before the King of Pop left town.
He said meeting Michael Jackson was an amazing opportunity and that Jackson will always be remembered as the King of Pop.
McCorkel said Jackson signed a water bottle for his 9-year-old daughter.
"Very, very personal," McCorkel said of Jackson.
"I asked him if he had ever been fishing, and he said, 'I have never been fishing,'" said McCorkel, who was surprised to hear that.
Still, McCorkel said Jackson was very kind to him and his coworkers.
