Father Arrested, Charged In Child's Death

Man Turned Himself In After Warrant Issued

POSTED: Saturday, June 27, 2009

A St. Johns County father was arrested and charged with culpable negligent manslaughter and neglect of a child causing harm, nearly two weeks after his 1-year-old daughter was found unresponsive in a running car.

Omar Donte Long, 30, turned himself in to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office on Friday afternoon. His daughter died after being rushed to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine on June 14.

The investigation began when deputies, along with St. Johns County Fire Rescue, responded to a 911 call to Long's home in the 300 block of Harvard Rd., in reference to an unresponsive juvenile. The girl, Arianna Long, was transported to Flagler Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Family members said when they found her she was blue in color and unresponsive.

The investigation revealed that the victim was inside a 2006 Dodge Charger that was registered to Omar Long. Detectives learned that Long had taken the child's mother to work at Flagler Hospital at 6 a.m., while the victim was placed in a booster seat in the back seat. Long returned home. He later told police he didn't know the child was in the car.

Another family member, a 21-year old woman, woke up around noon and did not hear the toddler and became concerned. Long was sleeping on the couch and the woman began to search for Arianna throughout the house. She then went outside and ran to the Long's car, which was parked in the driveway and running. The doors were locked and she spotted the child in the back seat and said she appeared unresponsive. Long was awakened and he found a spare key and unlocked the doors to get to the child. Fire Rescue arrived and transported her to Flagler Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Dr. Frederick Hobin, at the medical examiner's office, performed an autopsy and preliminary results revealed that the cause of death was exposure due to heat or hyperthermia, however a final report is pending toxicology reports.

Through interviews of witnesses and family members, as well as the execution of search warrants and consultation with the State Attorney's Office, detectives gathered probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect Friday morning. He turned himself in Friday afternoon and remains in jail in lieu of bonds totaling $500,000.
