Sexual Assault Center Could Be Closed
Service On List Of Possible Cuts If Tax Increase Fails

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A service for victims of rape is one of the city programs Mayor John Peyton's office said could end if a property tax increase is not approved to fund next year's city budget.
Jacksonville's Sexual Assault Response Center is one of many possible casualties if the City Council makes budget cuts beyond what the Peyton administration is proposing. About 360 rape victims turn to the center for help every year.
According to the mayor's "Fix It Now" plan, the center, public libraries and fire stations are among city facilities that may have to shut their doors if there's no new revenue.
"It is a service to those we have helped in the past that goes unnoticed," Dr. Delphia Williams said. "There's no other sexual assault resource center in Duval County. So if this were to go away, there would be a serious challenge and a void in our city."
Threats of closing the center is just one reason the mayor says raising the millage rate is the only way to save some public services.
City Councilman Bill Bishop said it is too early to discuss whether the facility will shut down and said the council has a lot of work to do to decide what will or will not happen to the center.
