Mom Of Boy Found Charged With Neglect

State Says Mother Had Agreed To Keep Father Away From Children

POSTED: Wednesday, July 1, 2009

St. Johns County sheriff's deputies have charged a second adult with child neglect after a 3-year-old boy knocked on a neighbor's door to complain about being hungry and hot.

Last Wednesday, that neighbor in the Switzerland neighborhood called 911 when the boy showed up at her door.

Deputies said the boy's father, Jarred McKie, 24, was found passed out in his home. In the house investigators said they also found pills, drug paraphernalia, open liquor bottles and another child -- a 1-year-old in a crib.

McKie was arrested on Friday on the neglect charge and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, deputies announced they had also arrested the mother, Heather Sessions, 23.

After previous incidents with children, authorities said Session signed an agreement to keep McKie away from the children until he completed a parenting class, but she let him move back in with her and the children.

Investigators said they decided to charge her because she allowed McKie to be alone with the children.

The two children are now being cared for by a relative.
