76 Dogs Confiscated In Putnam County
Site Believed To Be Illegal Puppy Mill

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services is in the process of confiscating 76 dogs from a home at 106 Lisa Dr. in Hollister.
Police received an anonymous tip that there were many dogs on the property and it was believed to be an illegal puppy mill.
Supervisor Nikki Cavanaugh went to the scene and did not like the conditions. She called for Codes Enforcement and Deputies. Codes Enforcement advised that the land owners were not permitted to sell animals.
Codes Enforcement called health department officials, who said the site was in violation of health standards.
Cavanaugh, working with the Humane Society, determined that there was not enough food and water on the property, nor was there an area for the dogs to get proper exercise.
Several dogs appeared to have eye infections. Police decided to confiscate the dogs, and the dogs will be divided among animal services, rescue groups and foster homes until a time when the case has been decided.
A local vet has agreed to examine all of the dogs and treat and worm as necessary.
Channel 4's Adam Landau said one dog gave birth just 20 minutes before officers arrived.
He said there were also 56 birds on site but were not taken.
The owner of the dogs was not on the property at the time of the initial investigation. Cavanaugh did talk to him by phone.
Landau talked to a woman who said she and her husband lived there and took care of the animals, though they were not the homeowners.
Charges for animal cruelty are pending.
