Boy Dies In NW Jacksonville House Fire

Firefighter Suffers Minor Injury Battling Fire

POSTED: Thursday, July 2, 2009

Firefighters are trying to what started a fire that killed a 3-year-old boy Thursday afternoon.

It happened at a home in the 2900 block of West 9th street. Firefighters said the fire broke out in the front bedroom of the home.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue spokesman Tom Frances said a group of eight adults and children were in and around the home when a child ran out and said there was a fire.

All but the youngest boy made it out of the house. Frances said the boy's mother tried to go back in to save him, but the smoke was too thick. The child was not breathing when firefighters got to him.

"All the other family members and friends did manage to exit the structure, but as we know, all help came too late for that child," Francis said.

One firefighter had minor injuries and was taken to Baptist Medical Center.

Family and friends said they were gathering at the home to celebrate the 4th of July holiday, they never thought this would happen.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide detectives and the state fire marshall's office were called to investigate, which is standard practice in a fire death.

The American Red Cross has provided the family with a hotel room to stay. They are also providing the family with food, clothing and medication.
