NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- Two people aboard a boat that caught fire in the Nassau River on Friday morning are being treated at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
According to the Nassau County Fire Chief Chuck Cooper, the two managed to beach the 31-foot boat near the state Road A1A bridge and were on the shore when rescue personnel arrived.
One person suffered minor burns and the other was hospitalized as a precaution. Their names were not released, but Cooper believed they are from Cocoa Beach.
"I was coming over the bridge heading to lunch and my step-dad saw the smoke coming off the boat," witness Philip Garbarini said. "We saw the flames coming out of the boat and black smoke."
The fire continued to grow after the pair got off. Nassau firefighters along with a Jacksonville Fire-Rescue marine unit battled the place from the shore and boats, but the fire did not go out until it burned to the waterline.
"We controlled the blaze the best we could until JFRD came in," Cooper said.
The Coast Guard also assisted in the effort.
Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission are investigating what caused the blaze.
