Family Mourns 3-Year-Old Killed In Fire

Mother Remembers Boy As Full Of Life, Wonderful Child

POSTED: Friday, July 3, 2009
UPDATED: 11:21 pm EDT July 3, 2009

The family of a 3-year-old boy killed when their northwest Jacksonville home caught on fire Thursday afternoon returned to see the damage and remember Keyontaye Poole.

Keyontaye was in a back bedroom just before 5 p.m. when something sparked a fire. Eight people were in and around the house at the time at the time preparing for a Forth of July event and Keyontaye was the only one who did not get out.

His mother, Tacara Love, tried to go back in with a water hose, but she got no water pressure, the smoke was thick and it was pitch black.

"I heard my baby calling me -- 'Mama' -- and there was nothing, I mean nothing I could do," Love said. "I just ran into my mother's back yard and fell and said, 'I know, he gone, I know he gone.'"

Although the state fire marshal’s office is still investigating the cause, Love thinks Keyontaye might have been playing with a lighter.

The Red Cross is putting the family up a hotel, but they came back to their house Friday to see the damage for themselves.

Love approached Channel 4's Dan Leveton and said she wanted to tell the world about her son.

"He was a wonderful child," Love said. "He was full of life; good spirits; a good boy."

Love and other family members said their faith in God is what will keep them going.
