Accused Killer Surrenders In Putnam County

Man Accused Of Killing St. Augustine Man During Attempted Robbery

POSTED: Tuesday, July 7, 2009
UPDATED: 2:17 pm EDT July 7, 2009

A man wanted in the killing of a St. Augustine man in San Mateo last month has turned himself in at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies took 22-year-old Calvin Johnson into custody Sunday afternoon almost a week after naming him a suspect in the June 27 slaying of Ricky Murray.

Investigators said Johnson demanded money from Murray as he sat in a parked car with two other people on Asia Road. Murray was shot, but managed to drive to the Dollar General store on U.S. Highway 17 in East Palatka, where rescue personnel responded. Murray died later at a Palatka hospital.

The other people in the car were not hurt.
