JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A civilian employee of the Florida Air National Guard and a Duval County inmate are accused of trying to smuggle tobacco into the prison.
Correctional officers said they received a tip that prisoner Brian Dennison's girlfriend was to drop off marijuana and tobacco at a prearranged location on Thursday morning.
According to the arrest report, FANG employee Raymond Newkirk took Dennison out in a golf cart Thursday for the purpose of picking up garbage along FANG Road, near the Montgomery Correctional Center. Officers watching from the woods said they saw two pass trash along the road and go directly to the location to retrieve a white plastic bag that turned out to contain tobacco products.
The report said Dennison tried to hide the tobacco inside his pants as officers approached.
Officers said there was no marijuana in the bag and a search of the surrounding area turned up no signs of controlled substances.
Newkirk, 58, and Dennison, 32, were arrested and charged with introducing or possession contraband into a detention facility.
Investigators said Newkirk has allowed other inmates to do the same thing in the past.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said why a FANG employee was out with a Duval County inmate remains under investigation.
