2 Die After Truck Leaves I-95 Near Airport
Published On: Oct 14 2011 03:02:43 PM EDT Updated On: Jul 17 2007 05:33:22 AM EDTTwo people were killed in a crash on Interstate 95 near the airport at midday Tuesday.
Witnesses told the Florida Highway Patrol that a southbound bread delivery truck left the travel lanes just north of the Duval Road exit just before 11:30 a.m., drifted off the median, clipped a light pole and continued into the woods.
Paul Thompson, 42, a passenger in the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 22-year-old Kennard Montford, died about an hour later at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
Troopers said neither man was wearing a seatbelt.
"Not sure if the driver may have been having some kind of medical condition that caused him to lose control, the passenger may have tried to grab the wheel and just lost control," said FHP Lt. Bill Leeper.
Southbound traffic was backed up for about one mile at noon, but all but one lane reopened by 12:30 p.m. and traffic began to return to normal.
