2 Killed In Head-On Crash On I-95

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -

Two drivers were killed and three other people were hurt when a small car going the wrong way on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County crashed into an SUV just before midnight Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The southbound lanes of I-95 between St. Augustine Road and county Road 210 were closed for more than four hours while the wreck was investigated and cleared.

Troopers said 47-year-old Richard Welch, of Palm Coast, was driving north in the southbound lanes when he struck a Chevrolet Suburban head-on. Welch and the driver of the SUV, Mary Jordan, 49, of Port Salerno, Fla., were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers in Jordan's SUV were transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, were Nathaniel Jones, 75, was in critical condition and Willie Davis, 47, in serious condition.

A third car involved was run off the road. The driver of that car was taken to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine with minor injuries.

I-95 was reopened about 4:30 a.m.
