BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -

Two people were killed Monday night when a single-engine plane crashed into a residential area on Merritt Island, officials said.

The crash happened around 8:35 p.m. on Paula Avenue, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's officials said two people aboard the Liberty XL-2 airplane died in the crash.  Their identities have not been released.

"I knew it was in trouble right away," said Thom Brophy, who saw the plane go down and called 911. "It just basically (sounded) like a backfire and then engine failure."

Officials said a power line was knocked down in the crash, leaving two homes without power, but there was no major damage to any homes in the area.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

No other details were immediately released.
