2 Hospitalized After Car Plows Into Surf Station

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A car plowed into a St. Augustine surf shop, sending two people to area hospitals Tuesday morning.

St. Augustine police officers said the driver was going south on Anastasia Boulevard at about 1:30 p.m. but missed the curb and crashed into the front of the Surf Station shop.

Surf Station owner Tory Strange said he's received some odd calls at night, but nothing that compares to the call he received early Tuesday.

"I thought it was the typical rock thrown through, and I thought the manager could deal with it. He said, 'No. You've got to come down here,'" Strange said.

A video from a surveillance camera outside of the surf shop shows a white Mercedes barrel into the front of the store at a high rate of speed.

"It looked like something that was in a movie. It didn't look like it was real, and then I was like, 'Man, that really happened,'" said witness James Carggs.

Police and fire and rescue arrived at the scene and pulled a man and a woman from the crumpled car.

The woman in the passenger seat of the car was trapped underneath the dashboard. It took police at least 30 minutes to free her from the car.

The driver and the passenger, whose names were not immediately released, were taken to Flagler Hospital in serious condition. The woman was later flown to Shands Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries.

The crash also caused about $40,000 of damage to the building.

Strange said he expects to have the mess cleaned up within a couple of days

"Adam, a local contractor in town, has his crew on there already. It just happened last night and they're already here working," Strange said.
