JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Two people were hurt in a crash on Interstate 10 at U.S. 301 late Wednesday afternoon, and four others were hurt in a chain-reaction accident in backed up traffic resulting from the first accident.

The original crash happened in the westbound lanes about 5:45 p.m., when a passenger vehicle merging into traffic hit the back end of a tractor-trailer.

Two people were taken to UF Health Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries.

A second crash involving three vehicles occurred a short time later and half a mile east of the first accident was attributed to the backed-up traffic.

The vehicle in the middle of the secondary crash caught on fire, but it was quickly put out by firefighters headed to the original accident.

Authorities say four more people transported as a result of the second crash, all with non-life-threatening injuries.
