2 drivers killed in Jacksonville Beach crash

Police say Honda crossed media, hit VW Golf head-on

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A car driving fast on 11th Avenue South early Sunday morning crossed the media and hit another car head on, killing that driver and himself, according to Jacksonville Beach police Cmdr. Mark Evans.

Police said a Honda Accord driven by 31-year-old John Groves was doing north on 11th Avenue near A1A at a high rate of speed about 12:30 a.m. when it crossed into the southbound lane and struck a Volkswagen Golf, driven by 27-year-old Bloneva Palmer.

Palmer was killed instantly, according to officers Firefighters had to cut Groves out of the Honda. He was transported by air ambulance to to UF Health Jacksonville, where he died a short time later.

According to the police report, no other people were involved in the crash.

Police are investigating to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash, but toxicology reports may not be completed for weeks.
