Doctor Accused Of Trading Drugs For Sex

74-Year-Old Physician Bonds Out Of Jail 4 Hours After Arrest

POSTED: Friday, July 10, 2009

A physician police accuse of trading drugs for sex was arrested Thursday at his St. Nicholas office.

John Rahaim, 74, was charged with trafficking in illegal drugs and conspiracy to commit a prohibited act.

An investigation began in October when a woman had a sexual relationship with Rahaim in exchange for pills and prescriptions. Detectives found that a CVS pharmacy in Lakewood had filled prescriptions written for the woman on Rahaim's prescription pad for several painkillers, including Oxycodone and Hydrocodone.

The woman told detectives she had sex with the doctor in his office and at his home. Police said she also told them she witnessed Rahaim exchange prescription pills for crack cocaine, according to the arrest report.

According to the arrest report, Rahaim told detectives that the woman was not his patient and he was responsible for the fraudulent prescriptions. He said his office and home had been repeatedly burglarized.

"Dr. Rahaim seemed nervous and appeared to be untruthful about his knowledge of the fraudulent prescriptions," the detective wrote in the report.

Over the next several months, police interviewed other women said she had had a sexual relationship with Rahaim in exchange for pain medications, including Xanax and Lortab. One woman said he kept pills and a crack pipe in the golf bag in the truck of his car.

The arrest came Thursday after detectives conducted a surveillance of a woman meeting with Rahaim. Police said immediately after the meeting, the woman turned over a pill bottle containing 11 Hydrocodone pills.

Rahaim posted bond and was released four hours after he was arrested.
