ORTEGA, Fla. -- A sudden high crime rate in a high priced neighborhood in Ortega spurred a meeting among residents in the area Monday night.
Neighbors said things in their normally quiet neighborhood are getting out of hand, with everything from robberies to rapes.
People in Ortega held the crime alert meeting, alongside Jacksonville police, to get the word out about what they said is a growing problem.
The meeting was put together not by the city or police, but by concerned citizens who sent out an e-mail.
The crowd of about 500 packed into the sanctuary of Ortega United Methodist Church. Every pew was filled, leaving standing room only to hear about recent crimes in the area.
"We're fed up with it," said John Reynolds, a concerned resident. "We're both victims of it. I had a vehicle stolen and she had a home invasion."
The meeting was in response to the recent rape of a 14-year-old. Police let the crowd know someone was arrested in connection with that.
Neighbors were also alarmed by two sexual assaults in Ortega Farms, possibly by the same suspect, of a woman in her 50s and a woman in her 70s.
Police said they have a person of interest in jail on unrelated charges in those cases.
Another crime many were concerned about was a person who was followed home from Publix and robbed.
Lt. Ron Norse addressed the crowd about that incident.
Police pointed out at the meeting that citizens need to help police their own neighborhoods because police officers can't be everywhere.
"This is a neighborhood that I was born and raised in," said Monica Hentschel, a concerned resident. "To me, it seems to be a real spike that's happening."
