JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday it would allocate $60 million in federal stimulus money to build and improve ferry docks and facilities, including $3 million on the St. Johns River Ferry in Mayport.
The funds, from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will be used to upgrade the ramps and improve safety at both the Mayport and Fort George Island terminals.
"The projects we selected will help put people back to work and at the same time offer more access to areas that lack transportation options," DOT Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement announcing the funding. "It is about providing more travel choices to people from communities that need it the most."
The Mayport project was the only funding in Florida. The DOT also will pay $1 million for a new boat at the Savannah River Ferry in Georgia.
