JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Fire investigators said a house fire in northwest Jacksonville early Wednesday may have been intentionally set.
The Jacksonville Fire-Rescue Division said fire broke out in the home about 7 a.m. in the 3100 block of Division Street.
While the fire was extinguished in a matter of minutes, JFRD investigators said it looked like two fires had been set, one in each bedroom. One investigator said there was a strong odor of an accelerant in each bedroom.
The family was not home at the time. The homeowner, Evonne Smith, told Channel 4's Jason Law that the house was in the foreclosure process and the family had to be out by November.
"I'm just kind of furious that somebody would do that and know that I have five kids," Smith said.
Smith, the wife and mother of five, was present Wednesday as arson investigators examined her home. Investigators said the fire was set sometime in the morning in broad daylight.
"We're looking at it as an intentionally set fire," said Capt. Phil Roman, of the State Fire Marshal's Office. "We'd like to ask to anyone who has information regarding this fire to please contact the local sheriff's office."
Smith said the arson to her home leaves her family homeless sooner than they were prepared for.
"I'm just asking anyone who could help us out," Smith said. "Me and my kids got to live somewhere. Me and my husband. Five kids and husband. There's seven people that live in that house."
The family is being assisted by the Red Cross.
The fire remains under investigation by firefighters and police. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
