JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man suspected of burglarizing a northwest Jacksonville home Thursday morning ran into a Wal-Mart, apparently changed into some clothes off the rack and disappeared into a crowd of shoppers that were evacuated by police searching the store.
The incident began when two men broke into a home in northwest Jacksonville not knowing a 17-year-old was home alone inside, police said. The girl hid under the bed while the burglars took a big-screen television, computer and purse, police said.
The girl -- not hurt, but shaken -- called her parents, then police.
Police spotted the suspects' car and chased them into the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Lem Turner Road, where they ditched the car and ran. One was caught outside, but the other ran into the store.
"He almost ran me down when I was walking to go inside the store," a customer told Channel 4.
Officers evacuated the shoppers from the store for about 10 minutes while they brought in a K-9 unit and searched the store. All they found was the man's discarded clothing.
"We believe that he possibly changed clothes and was able to mingle with the customers and exit the store," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. T.L. Brown said.
The investigation into the burglary and search for the man continues. He'll now also face a charge of petty theft.
