Ensuring Restaurants Make The Grade

State Regulators Inspect Kitchens At Least Twice Every Year

POSTED: Tuesday, July 21, 2009
UPDATED: 4:52 pm EDT July 21, 2009

When going out to eat, do you ever wonder what's really going on the kitchen?

The state of Florida regularly checks up on restaurants, follows up on any citations for unsanitary conditions and makes records of its inspections available online.

At least twice a year every licensed restaurant is visited by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The inspections are unannounced.

Many restaurants pass with flying colors, but a significant number of violations are found at others. If the violation is likely to contribute to food contamination, illness or environmental damage, the restaurant will be cited. If the issued is not resolved, the establishment can be closed.

Restaurant Report CardOn July 11, Dai Loi Chinese and Japanese Restaurant on Normandy Boulevard was ordered closed after inspectors said they found 20 live roaches running around the kitchen.

The inspector even said the owner threatened to kill him, so he called the police.

The next day Dai Loi got another visit from the state and inspectors found it had cleaned up enough to reopen.

Many violations do not warrant a shutdown, but critical issues will bring a return visit by inspectors.

On July 9, the Krystal at 7459 Lem Turner Road had 10 critical violations and five non-critical.

Inspectors noted food sitting on the floor, slime buildup on the soda nozzle and that workers didn't always wash their hands. The Krystal was allowed to stayed open, but inspectors said they will return to see if the restaurant had cleaned up its act.

To check on your favorite restaurant, check the database on MyFloridaLicense.com. The restaurant's license status and details of the most recent inspections are constantly updated.
