MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- It was quite a surprise for a 14-year-old at CVS Pharmacy. He went to pick up a bag of candy for his little brother, but what he ended up finding was a bag of cocaine.
"It could have been anybody's kids, but I was really concerned because it could have been mine," said Bonnie Cowart, the teen's mother.
Bonnie wasn't laughing Wednesday night when she was shopping at the drug store in Middleburg. She could not believe when her 14-year-old son, Corby, came up to her outside the store and said he found a bag of cocaine right next to a bag of candy he was buying.
"I was just getting me and my little brother a pack of Skittles," Corby said.
Bonnie said her son was trying to tell her something at the store, but she was busy and not paying attention. But when he showed her the bag when they got outside, that's when she became worried.
"What upset me was the fact that it was in the candy," Bonnie said. "A lot of times we let our 3-year-old pick out the candy he wants, and had it been my 3-year-old that got it and we were not paying close attention, then he would not have known to give it to me. He would have put it in his pocket and eventually in his mouth."
Bonnie's husband took the bag to police. The Clay County Sheriff's Office told the couple they were going to review the security tapes at the store.
When they did, police said the camera was not in range of the candy aisle, which is directly in front of the cashiers.
CVS said they could not comment on what happened.
When asked if he knew what it was he found, Corby said, "Just a little bag of white power in it. There is poison that looks like that, so I got it up and gave it to my mom."
"I was concerned about who may have seen him get it out of the box of Skittles," Bonnie said. "You know obviously someone dropped it there or someone purposely put it there for some reason."
