JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Investigators said two Jacksonville men were taken to a hospital after their car was shot up by someone in a passing car on state Road 9A.
Police told Channel 4 that Rafael Warfield, 20, and Dakaw Butler, 20, were driving in a car with two other people toward state Road 9A from Beach Boulevard.
Authorities said witnesses told them when Butler, the driver, attempted to merge onto state Road 9A north, a blue Mitsubishi pulled up next to them. It was then witnesses said someone in the back seat opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle. Police reports said the Mitsubishi then sped away northbound on state Road 9A.
Investigators said after the shooting, one of the people in the backseat took the wheel, drove to a Denny's on Atlantic Boulevard and called police. Butler and Warfield were both taken to Shands Hospital, where Butler remains in critical condition. A nursing supervisor had no information on Warfield Sunday afternoon, but police said he was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Police reports said the witnesses told them they had never seen the gunman before and had no idea why they opened fire.
Detectives said they have not made any arrests but are continuing their investigation. They ask anyone with any information to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
