JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 16-year-old girl was killed and five other young people injured when a pickup truck crashed early Monday morning on Bartram Park Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Officers said there were six people in a small pickup truck -- three people in the cab and three riding in the bed of the truck. Police said the pickup appeared to be traveling too fast around a curve in the 13000 block of the road, overcorrected, struck a curb and overturned.
The three people in the truck bed and one inside the cab were all ejected.
Miranda Zant, a student at Lee High School, was pronounced dead on the scene. Police said it appeared the vehicle rolled over her.
One other young woman was in critical condition and four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Their names were not released.
The crash happened early Monday just south of Old St. Augustine Road. The road was blocked for about four hours, reopening about 8 a.m.
Police said the victim and the driver smelled of alcohol and the driver's blood alcohol level was being tested to determine if that was a factor.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, anyone under 18 cannot ride in the bed of a truck unless they are restrained.
