Downtown Streets Reopen After Gas Leak

Fire-Rescue Says There Was No Need For Evacuations

POSTED: Tuesday, July 28, 2009
UPDATED: 1:29 pm EDT July 28, 2009

Firefighters and Teco Gas worked for two hours Tuesday to lock down a gas leak on Laura Street between the Modis and SunTrust buildings.

Officials discovered a leak in a 2-inch natural gas pipeline about 11 a.m. after someone reported smelling gas.

Laura between Bay Street and Independent Driver was closed, as was a small part of Water Street in front of Jacksonville Landing and the on ramp to the Main Street Bridge. The streets were reopened just after 1 p.m.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue said there was no need to evacuate nearby buildings.
