JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Community College at Jacksonville is just a few days away from becoming Florida State College at Jacksonville, and this morning, the name change became very visible.
Workers were changing a sign at FCCJ's Downtown campus to reflect the new name. Florida State College at Jacksonville became a legal entity on July 1, and school begins full operations under the new name and mission on Saturday.
The name change reflects the school's goal of offering more bachelor's degrees. FCCJ has been offering four-year degrees since 2006, and now offers seven such programs.
On June 25, Governor Charlie Crist signed the Florida College System bill into law, which enabled FCCJ to become FSCJ. School leaders said that as a state college, the school will be able to develop four-year programs more rapidly than in the past. Future degrees will cover knowledge-based careers including information technology, allied health, business, financial services and other fields where workers are in demand.
