Speicher To Be Buried In Jacksonville

Family Meets With U.S. Intelligence Officials

Eighteen years after Navy pilot Michael "Scott" Speicher went off to war, the Forrest High School and Florida State University graduate will be laid to rest in the Jacksonville area.

Family attorney Cindy Laquidara announced Tuesday that Speicher's wishes were to be buried in the town where he grew up. The family is planning both public and private services. Laquidara said that a procession will travel through Jacksonville and pass by Forrest High School, Speicher's church, and will also stop at the Veteran's Memorial Wall. The exact burial spot has not yet been named, nor has a date for the service.

Also Tuesday, the family received the first of a series of top-secret briefings about the discovery of his remains in the desert of western Iraq, near where his Navy plane was shot down in January 1991 on the first night of the first Gulf War.

Laquidara said the meetings with officials from the Defense Intelligence Agency are designed so that the family will know when, where and how Speicher died.

On Monday, Laquidara said evidence gathered over the years that Speicher was missing cast doubt on the Pentagon's claim that he did not survive the crash of his F/A 18 Hornet.

Speicher's family was notified Saturday that his remains had been found after a search by Marines.
