Thieves Attempt ATM Heist With Construction Vehicle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Some thieves with a stolen backhoe tried to steal an ATM early Wednesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.The attempted theft was at a Vystar Credit Union stand-alone ATM in the 10000 block of Old St. Augustine Road in Mandarin. Police responded to the scene at about 4:30 a.m. after a passerby called 911.Police said the Caterpillar tractor was more than likely stolen from a construction site. JSO said the tractor with a backhoe pulled the ATM out of the ground, then fled the scene.Police were still looking for the suspects early Wednesday. They have not released a description.Police do not yet know where the backhoe came from, but will make the determination according to the serial number on the construction vehicle.Police ask if you know anything about the incident, you can call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS (8477).
