1844: Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, and his brother Hyrum Smith are murdered by a mob at the Carthage, Ill., jail. The brothers had been arrested after Smith ordered a printing press destroyed after it was used to publish an exposé critical of his power and practice of polygamy, which incited a riot. Five men were later tried for the murders, but all were acquitted. Following Smith's death, schisms developed in the leadership of his movement. The largest group, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, followed Brigham Young, settling in what would become the Utah Territory.
