Cash For Clunkers To End After Weekend

450,000 Vehicles Have Been Sold Nationwide

POSTED: Friday, August 21, 2009
UPDATED: 6:50 pm EDT August 21, 2009

Just by looking down a row of cars and clunkers at car lots around town, you can tell just how successful the Cash for Clunkers program has been. This is it's last weekend.

Larry Elliott is looking to trade in his clunker. He's been thinking about it since the program began.

"I think it's a pretty good deal getting $4,500 for a car that probably would be worth $2,000," Elliott said. "You save a couple."

A lot of other people have thought so, too. Nationwide, 450,000 vehicles have been sold. Seventy deals alone have been made at Mike Davidson Ford in Arlington.

"I think a lot of people would have been in the market for a car and buying a new car at the same time," said Tom Workman, who works at Mike Davidson. "I don't think we would have seen the numbers that we've seen. I think a lot of people knew this was a wonderful opportunity for them personally."

Dealers expect a surge in sales again this weekend as many find out Cash for Clunkers is about to run out of gas.

Right now there are no plans in the works to extend the popular program. Many dealers are still waiting for the cash from the government. In fact, on Friday at Mike Davidson, they got their first check from the government for the deal they made.

"We have not had any concerns will we get paid," Workman said. "We have been very efficient on our paperwork. We know all our stuff is right and tight. Now that the flow is coming we think it will speed up and we will be doing cash for clunkers this weekend."

If you are planning on taking advantage of the program this weekend, here are a couple of things you need to have in order at least for your paperwork.

Make sure the car is insured and licensed. You have to turn all of that in this weekend. There is no leeway because the programs ends Monday night.
