A Middleburg driver trying to elude police officers ended up in Black Creek, then at the Clay County jail after a high-speed pursuit through two counties early Wednesday morning.
According to the arrest report, 32-year-old Jay Rain sped past a Starke police cruiser about 2:30 p.m.. With the officer in pursuit, officers said Rain drove east on state Road 16 and turned north on U.S. Highway 21 at speeds up to 80 mph.
Clay County sheriff's deputies put out stop sticks, which flattened both front tires on Rain's pickup truck, but he kept going.
The report said Rain threw a bucket out of his pickup which hit one of the pursuing cruisers but did not hurt the officer.
When reaching Middleburg, Rain turned onto Main Street and wound up going down the Black Creek boat ramp and into the water. Deputies said that as his pickup truck was sinking, Rain broke out a window with a wrench and swam to shore and tried to run.
Rain was eventually captured and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and eluding police in Clay County. He may also face other traffic charges in Bradford County.
