JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two Jacksonville high school students are getting national recognition for their posters designed to educate kids about the dangers of poisons.
Each year, the National Poison Prevention Week Council holds a poster contest in advance of the annual Poison Prevention Week. This year, Shannon Donnelly was named a second-place winner in the contest's 9- to 13-year-old category. Elizabeth Utset placed third in the same category.
Both girls are now freshmen at Stanton College Prep and created the posters while they were students at James Weldon Johnson Preparatory School.
Shannon's poster was titled "Children Act Fast, So Do Poisons," corresponding to one of the themes of the contest. Elizabeth's poster was titled "Watch Out For Poisons!" and used the "Children Act Fast, So Do Poisons" theme as well.
Both posters were selected for the national competition from entries submitted to the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center – Jacksonville.
The students each received formal letters from the national council, along with a Target gift card and an award certificate.
Poison Prevention Week 2010 takes place March 14-20. For more information on the poster contest and steps to take to prevent accidental poisonings, visit
