JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's a mystery no more.
On Friday, Channel 4 got a sneak peek at the progress being made on Jacksonville's very own Walk of Fame.
For weeks, the front of the Florida Theatre has been shrouded behind a giant green curtain, one that's not only covering up construction but is keeping the names on the Walk of Fame secret.
Channel 4's Ayesha Faines went behind it Friday.
There's a long list of stars, from Lou Rawls to Jim Carrey, who over the years have added to the Florida Theatre's legacy.
But it's the stars who keep it running.
The Florida Theatre is acknowledging its most generous contributors in a clever way, with a Hollywood-like sidewalk of fame.
"Well, we are in our capital campaign where our goal is $5 million," Florida Theatre's Kendal Barson said.
The campaign was launched in 2007, and now two years later, it's reached the $1.5 million mark.
"We're going to be celebrating by unveiling our contributors that helped us reach our first goal," Barson said.
A rough economy can be devastating to art institutions, but this one is surviving.
"We do feel it, but the community has come together with our board of directors," Barson said. "But we've managed to pulled through with generous contributions."
The stars start at $10,000 and then they reach to a higher level to get the big ones.
When the walk is unveiled later this month, there will be 42 stars and counting. Eventually the walk will extend down the sidewalk and around the corner, where there's room to recognize more sponsors and the modest donors, too.
"We're also going to launch a brick campaign on the 21st," Barson said. "A brick campaign of being able to get your name on a brick for a smaller cost."
And yes, there will be some real stars on the Walk of Fame, bricks displaying the autographs of some of the most famous personalities who've graced the stage.
Tony Bennett has already signed his.
On the evening of Sept. 21, the Florida Theatre will officially unveil the Walk of Fame and cap off the night with a Smokey Robinson concert.
