ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- An Atlantic Beach man came home to disaster Thursday.
A fire had destroyed his house and killed his pets.
The fire happened in the 200 block of Walter Drive, and the home is a total loss.
Two dogs were killed in the fire. No person was in the home at the time of the fire.
The family is being helped by the Red Cross so they will have a place to stay.
Firefighters were worried just how close the fire was to trees and brush. They were afraid the trees might catch on fire and spread the fire to other homes and businesses, but that didn't happen.
"You can see some of the trees actually caught fire," Jacksonville Fire Rescue Chief Chip Drysdale said. "Fortunately with all the rain we're having, woods fires right now aren't a major threat to our community. Even though part of the woods caught fire, it didn't extend into the woods behind the house."
The fire happened close to a community center and playground, where they have after-school activities.
The director said the fire was out so quickly they were never worried something would happen to their building.
