Report: Man Had Relationship With Gray

25-Year-Old Arrested, Charged With Extortion; Other Charges Pending

POSTED: Tuesday, September 15, 2009
UPDATED: 10:25 pm EDT September 15, 2009

A 25-year-old Jacksonville man wanted for questioning in connection with the three-day disappearance of a Ponte Vedra Beach woman was arrested after admitting "some involvement" in the case, a prosecutor told a judge Tuesday morning.

Deputies said Jasmin Osmanovic was identified as the man in the photograph released over the weekend as a person of interest in the case. He was picked up in Jacksonville Monday afternoon and transported to St. Johns County for hours of questioning. He was arrested about 1 a.m. and charged with extortion.

In the arrest report released Tuesday afternoon, Osmanovic claims to have had a romantic relationship with Quinn Gray, the 37-year-old mother of two who didn't return home on Sept. 4 and was the subject of a three-day search that included the resources of the FBI and the U.S. Marshal's Service.

The report says Osmanovic admitted he has known Gray for about a month and a half.

He said in the report that he did not kidnap her, but admits they spent the weekend together at various places around town.

Police said Osmanovic told them Gray and her husband, Reid Gray, have had problems with their marriage.

Police also said he admitted to having a sexual relationship with her and that he was trying to help her out from her cheating husband.

The report said Osmanovic admitted to delivering two letters to Gray's Ponte Vedra home. The first letter indicates that Gray's husband owes money and has to pay it back and that he can't involve the cops or the feds.

The second letter specifically says Gray's husband borrowed $50,000 and has a deadline to pay it back, but he refused.

The report also mentions Channel 4 reporter Diane Cho.

Police said Osmanovic admitted to being involved somehow with a letter addressed to Cho. The letter apparently was an opportunity for Cho to get information on this developing story.

The letter has been entered into evidence. Cho said she has never received it.

A split Coca-Cola can was also referenced in the report, the same one Gray had when she was found in Clay County. Police said whoever wrote the letters demanding money from Gray's husband used the can to demonstrate what could be done with a rifle. The letter said the person could split the can from more than 700 yards away, so imagine what could be done to Gray's husband.

"We've got some evidence right now that I can't get into that links him to attempting to gain monetarily in this endeavor," sheriff's office spokesman Kevin Kelshaw said.

Kelshaw would not discuss Osmanovic's connection to the alleged abduction of Gray.

When Gray was located walking in a parking lot near Orange Park on Sept. 7, she claimed she had been kidnapped and tied up.

Authorities found Osmanovic after receiving a tip from someone who said they knew the man and where he could be found. Investigators said a vehicle also wanted by investigators was also located in Duval County.

Gray was seen leaving the sheriff's office around 8 p.m. Monday, but she declined to speak to Channel 4's Jennifer Bauer.

Deputies said the investigation was continuing and additional charges were pending.

"There are layers of information and it's taken some time to get through all that," St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Chuck Mulligan. "We've got a team of detectives who are diligently pursuing this, as they have been since the first we learned of this case. But a very complicated case."

Osmanovic was ordered held on $100,000 bond on the extortion charge and immigration officials also put a hold on his release while they check his legal status.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is asking if anyone has information on the investigation to call Detective Kevin Kier at 904-824-8304. You can also remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a cash reward by calling Crimestoppers at 888-227-TIPS (8477).
