TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Two northeast Florida counties will be getting thousands of dollars from the state to help them support their local military communities.
Gov. Charlie Crist awarded $1.35 million in defense grants across the state, for projects that improve the state's position as a host state for military installations and activities.
Two Defense Reinvestment Grants are coming to the region. The city of Jacksonville was awarded $101,000 and the Clay County Chamber of Commerce was awarded $64,100. The governor's office said these grants help communities develop economic diversification strategies and implement base growth and reuse programs. State officials said the program encourages communities to analyze their economic reliance on defense expenditures and formulate specific plans to respond to the nation’s defense priorities.
The Clay County Development Authority received one of three Defense Infrastructure Grants given out statewide. The $50,000 grant will help the Camp Blanding Joint Training Center and Disaster Response Joint Operations Center Training Facility. The grant is for projects that address infrastructure needs related to the military installation.
The Governor's Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development administers the grants, in coordination with Enterprise Florida Inc. For 2009-2010, there are a total of nine Defense Reinvestment Grants, totaling $850,000. The three infrastructure grants total $500,000.
