Community Invited to Shred-A-Thon

POSTED: Friday, September 18, 2009
UPDATED: 5:59 pm EDT September 18, 2009

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is helping people protect themselves against identity theft by holding a Community Shred-A-Thon next week.

The event will be held Friday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will take place in the Orange Park Kennel Club's overflow parking lot, next to the Wachovia Bank at the intersection of Park Avenue (U.S. 17) and Wells Road. Organizers said the event will happen, rain or shine.

Drivers should enter the lot from Wells Road…and will exit onto Park Avenue.

A mobile unit from Shred-It will be on site to shred check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and other personal documents. Businesses are also invited to shred outdated documents. Organizers request that you not bring any cardboard, X-rays or 3-ring binders.

Informational material on the prevention of identity theft will also be available. Community leaders and local law enforcement officials will also be on hand, with information about fighting identity theft.

The sheriff's office said their shred-a-thon last year was the biggest one in the state, and they hope for an even larger turnout this year.
