JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Fire-Rescue personnel responded Friday morning to the U.S. Gypsum plant on Evergreen Avenue after a worker was critically injured in an industrial accident.
Police said a 2-ton piece of equipment fell on an employee's head. The man was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with what was described as life-threatening injuries.
Channel 4's Vickie Pierre was told two men were working on a cam gear drive. One of the workers removed a bolt believing the equipment was suspended from a chain, but it fell on the second man.
"It came down and hit the victim on the head and pinned him below it until rescue could get there," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Mike Perry. "The employee who was with him actually pulled the hoist, the cam box back off of him."
Because the victim suffered life-threatening injuries, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide detectives are investigating. The man's name was not immediately released, but police said he was in his 50s.
Police said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would also be investigating the accident.
