16-Year-Old Arrested After Puppies Killed

Home Burglarized, 2 Puppies Found Dead In Pool 4 Months Ago

POSTED: Monday, September 28, 2009
UPDATED: 10:39 pm EDT September 28, 2009

What happened in a Jacksonville home four months ago outraged animal lovers all across the city.

The home wasn't only broken into and burglarized, but two puppies inside were also killed.

Now police have made an arrest, and the suspect is only 16 years old, charged with burglary and animal cruelty.

Police said there were two puppies inside a cage and the 16-year-old picked the cage up and threw it in the backyard pool.

Within seconds, the cage sank to the bottom and both of the puppies drowned.

Police said the 16-year-old goes to Sandalwood High School.

Officers said they went to the school to question him after a friend of his tipped investigators off.

Police arrested him at the school and as of Monday night, he's still locked up.

The woman who owned the dogs didn't want to talk on camera but said she's still haunted by what happened.

They were her puppies, and she came home that afternoon to find not only her home burglarized, but her dogs dead -- at the bottom of her backyard swimming pool.

Animal control investigators called the crime heartbreaking.

"Clearly my first reaction is total and complete outrage," Leona Sheddan, director of the Jacksonville Humane Society, said at the time. "Anybody that would hurt a defenseless animal, we can't even describe how we feel."
