CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- After two people were killed in a fiery crash involving a school bus in Clay County Tuesday, a community is trying to cope.
Troopers said 19-year-old Elisabeth Brantley and 48-year-old Paul Bruchesky died in the crash at the intersection of Hall and Boree Road and Blanding Boulevard when their car rear-ended the bus and caught fire.
Samantha Brantley, 16, who was in the back seat of the car, is in Shands in good condition.
Twenty-one of the 22 children who were aboard the bus at the time of the crash, all under the age of 12, returned to school Wednesday.
"We were just grateful that none of our children were seriously injured," Middleburg Elementary School Principal Becky Wilkerson said. "We were worried about their emotional health as well. If they had seen anything, we were worried about that."
Dawn Greene, the bus driver, was preparing to make a left turn when the car slammed into back of the bus.
Wilkerson said only four of the 22 children on the bus were injured and all were released from hospitals Tuesday night.
"The bus driver did an amazing job getting them off the bus and trying to shield them," Wilkerson said. "We were checking on them. That was our first priority to make sure they were OK."
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating why Elisabeth Brantley didn't see the bus or just didn't stop. There were no tire marks on the road leading up to where the crash happened.
School officials were prepared to help the children through such a traumatic event.
"The teachers have been briefed and the guidance counselors, the nurse, everyone that if any children want to talk or seem upset or are complaining of any soreness or sickness, we'll send them to the clinic," said. "Guidance counselors are prepared to answer questions or if they just want to talk."
