KODIAK, Ala. -- Jacksonville native Paul Hicks was named the Coast Guards' 13th Master Cutterman at a ceremony Friday in Kodiak, Alaska.
Hicks, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., is homeported in Alaska onboard U.S. Coast Guard cutter Spar. Hicks has served more than 20 years at sea onboard eight different Coast Guard cutters. Hicks enlisted in 1980.
A recognized cutterman can wear the special insignia on their uniform. The insignia is comprised of a helm wheel surrounded by waves representing the heritage of the sea, a five point star noting five years sea service, and a shield representing the service and its seagoing traditions.
In 2006, the Master Cutterman award was commissioned to recognize the feat of 20 years of sea duty service.
