CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- A Clay County man said he started his weekend with an unexpected wake-up and a rescue after a boat carrying three men on the St. Johns River capsized.
Dana and Muffet Moran said they were woken up early Saturday morning to two men pounding on their backdoor.
"I'm like, 'This isn't good,'" Muffet said. "It was very scary. You don't know if you're going to be robbed or ambushed."
"At 3 o'clock in the morning, you wonder what somebody is doing in your backyard knocking on your window," Dana said.
It turned out that three men decided to go fishing in the St. Johns River around 11 the night before.
Their boat, about the size of a canoe flipped, dumping them into the water.
Two of the fishermen swam for more than an hour and made it to shore at the Moran's dock.
But their buddy was still out there.
The Moran's dialed 911.
Operator: Clay County Sheriff's Office, can I help you?
Caller: I have two guys on my back porch that were in the river and their boat capsized.
Operator: They're both conscious and breathing and walking around and everything, right?
Caller: Well, they're sitting on my back porch, but there's a guy in the water. Apparently he's a fat guy, and he can't get out of the water."
Sheriff's deputies arrived, and Dana put his boat in the water. Together, they went out looking for the missing fisherman.
"You could hear him screaming, 'Help me, help me,' for 30 to 40 minutes," Dana said.
Dana said it didn't take them long to locate the boater.
"He was exhausted and happy his long ordeal was over, and he was out of breath and tired for a big boy," Dana said. "He was lucky, and we were lucky."
"I'm glad it all turned out OK," Muffet said.
