JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Oscar, the injured 3-year-old pit bull that was badly hurt Tuesday morning, is still recovering after being ejected from a car.
The cage he was in fell from his owner's pickup on Interstate 95 during a wreck. To make matters worse, the cage fell from an overpass -- the equivalent of two stories.
Oscar broke his femur and his wrist is badly hurt.
He was transferred to a veterinarian surgeon Wednesday at the Jacksonville Veterinary Surgery Center.
Vets are trying to limit Oscar's movement.
X-rays confirmed what doctors thought -- a broken femur.
"He'll probably need some sort of plate or rod put in his leg to stabilize his femur," said Jay Erne, the surgeon who will try to fix Oscar up.
It's a serious break the doctor seems confident he can repair, but it's the injury to Oscar's wrist that'll be tricky.
"Not quite sure how that will be addressed, but once I'm able to evaluate Oscar, I'll figure that out," Erne said.
It appears Oscar is resting as comfortably as possible for now. The fact he's alive is pretty remarkable.
Fire rescue swooped in to help him and carry him to safety after he fell from the pickup truck.
"As much pain as he has been in, he has been the sweetest dog," said Kimberly Quintieri, with the St. Johns County Veterinarian Clinic, where where Oscar was taken Tuesday.
Quintieri said it's incredible he's been so calm considering what he's been through.
"Even when you go to stick your hand into the cage, he'll try to roll over for you to pet his stomach," Quintieri said.
