Sources: Station Investigation Under Way

Sources Say Fire Station Investigating Sexual Harassment Case

POSTED: Wednesday, October 14, 2009
UPDATED: 6:48 pm EDT October 14, 2009

Channel 4 has learned through sources that an internal investigation has been launched after Channel 4 asked questions about allegations of sexual harassment at Fire Station 50 off Beach Boulevard.

Sources said a supervisor at the station reported seeing inappropriate behavior toward a female firefighter at the station and immediately took it up the chain of command.

Channel 4 was told the female rookie firefighter, who's still on a probationary status, did not report what was going on, but there could be more women involved, according to sources.

Wanda Butler, a retired firefighter now with the International Association of Black Firefighters, knows all too well about what goes on behind closed doors at Jacksonville's fire stations. She was one of the first females hired as a firefighter in the late '70s.

"What's going to happen to the next woman at the next fire station?" Butler said. "If this behavior is still acceptable and and this is a ha-ha that we can get away with it, it's not going to stop. It's going to have to start from the top."

Tom Francis, the fire department's spokesman, would not comment on the story because the investigation just began, other than to say, "It is absolutely intolerable and insufferable, calling it despicable would still be an understatement."

Francis went on to say, "We want to be thorough with this investigation, and if it takes 24 hours or 24 days, then so be it."

"That mindset from the top is going to have to say this is not acceptable behavior," Butler said. "If you're treating women like this at the fire station, this is what's going to happen to you: you're going to be suspended. You're going to be demoted. But until that is enforced, it's not going to stop."
