JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A former salesman for Rainsoft, a water purification company, is facing criminal charges.
The charges come after a potential customer said he got too personal during a sales call to her home, and then came back to snoop around.
Sandy Sambito was in her kitchen when her neighbor knocked frantically on her door. She didn't know it, but the man who tried to sell her a water purification system earlier that day had come back and was apparently looking through her windows.
“It was about 8:40 at night, pretty dark on this side of the house,” Sambito's neighbor Jacob Gawrys said. “The gate was partially opened. I came out of the house and saw the gentlemen peering in the window like this. Again, I didn't know what his intentions were. I was like, ‘What are you doing here?’ and he said, ‘Sorry, wrong house.’”
But 51-year-old Barry Dusti had been asked to leave the home hours earlier when Sambito felt his sales questions were getting a little personal.
“I thought he was asking inappropriate questions as to who was living here, if I was married, if I was single, if I was dating, if anyone would be coming home while he was here,” Sambito said.
When Sambito found out the man returned, she was furious and terrified. She called 911 while her neighbor followed Dusti to his car, parked more than a half-mile away out of sight, around the corner.
“He had a purpose,” Sambito said. “Even though I don't know what it is, it wasn't good and it had nothing to do with trying to make a sale.”
Neighbors held Dusti until police arrived. They filled out a report, but didn't arrest him because trespassing and voyeurism are just misdemeanors.
“It made me feel even more violated,” Sambito said. “I just couldn't comprehend that someone could get away with that. He absolutely had to come on to my property, unlock my gate, come into my backyard.”
Sambito hasn't slept much since. She's trying to get a restraining order, but thinks more should be done.
“I don't think the laws are strict enough to protect families with children, or to protect any family,” she said.
Jay Toblin, the general manager of Rainsoft A&B Marketing, released this statement: “We found his behavior abhorrent. He told our office that he left the house, but he apparently went back. We found out and immediately terminated him. We have many fine upstanding people at our company. We do background checks on all of our employees. This was unacceptable behavior.”
