17-Year-Old Says 43-Year-Old Teacher Bought Her Cell Phone, Jewelry

UPDATED: 8:27 pm EDT October 29, 2009

A Nassau County High School teacher was arrested Thursday, accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with a female student who is now 17 years old.

Stephen Brian Turner, 43, was charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, providing alcohol to a person under 21 and distributing or showing obscene material to a minor.

The victim told detectives she and Turner began having a sexual relationship in 2008 and had bought her a cell phone, jewelry and was in the process of buying her a ring.

When detectives obtained and executed search and arrest warrants on Wednesday, they found that Turner had cleaned and abandoned his Fernandina Beach home. Investigators found Turner at his parents’ house in Jacksonville on Thursday and arrested him with the assistance of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Turner was booked into the Duval County jail and ordered held on $260,010 bond.

Turner, who taught journalism, television production and digital design at Fernandina Beach High since 2001, was suspended without pay last week by the Nassau County School Board.
