Duval County Hit By 13th H1N1 Death

Clay County Extends Vaccination Clinic; Schools To Provide Vaccine Next Week

UPDATED: 6:54 pm EDT October 29, 2009

The Duval County Health Department has confirmed the county's 13th death from the H1N1 swine flu.

Health officials said a 57-year-old woman died from the virus Saturday.

In Clay County, the health department said it will extend its H1N1 flu vaccination clinic through Friday because of a high demand for the vaccine.

Health officials there said the nasal spray vaccine is only good for people ages 2 through 49 who are healthy, not pregnant and not allergic to eggs.

Children under 10 years of age will need a second dose a month after getting the first.

The clinic is located at the Ed Stansel Clinic, 1345 Idlewild, in Green Cove Springs, and the vaccine is being administered by appointment only. To set up an appointment, call 904-529-2900.

Rick Cooler and his daughter Alexa were vaccinated against H1N1 at the clinic.

"It wasn't available yet at our doctor," Cooler said. "I'm a pilot, and with everybody traveling, it may be a good idea to get that."

The CCHD will also begin providing H1N1 vaccinations in schools starting next week.

The vaccine is voluntary, and parents and legal guardians must indicate on consent forms whether or not they wish to have their children receive the vaccine in school.

The health department said it will only be providing flu vaccine shots in the school-based clinics. It will start administering about 4,000 doses in elementary schools.

In Duval County, you can get the vaccine at the health department immunization clinic.

The St. Johns County Health Department said it ran out of the vaccine, but expects a new shipment Friday and also hopes to hold a clinic.

In Baker County, health officials said they have the vaccine and are offering it for those most at risk on Saturday.

Nassau County health officials are also holding clinics next week.

In Putnam County, officials said they just have a small supply, and they plan to vaccinate students in schools first.

And in Columbia County, officials believe they have enough vaccines right now.
