JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Brandon Robinson thought he was breaking even when he sold his 10 Florida-Georgia tickets on Craigslist for $1,400.
That's until the 14 $100-bills he was given were inspected a little more closely.
"They marked the bills and they all seemed to be fine," Robinson said. "I stopped back here at Bartram Park Publix, and they told me they were not real. They held them up to lights, and you could see Abraham Lincoln on top of Benjamin Franklin.
A scammer somehow converted a bunch of five-dollar bills, which pass the test of legal currency, into hundred-dollar bills.
"Florida-Georgia. It's a good time in Jacksonville," Robinson said. "I've been going downtown since I was 17. It just ain't right. I never thought I would encounter a transaction like that."
Robinson is one of many people who may be seeing transactions like that as the scalper market heats up before the game.
Particularly, fans should look out for fake tickets.
"The best bet is to ask to see the receipt where they actually purchased the tickets," Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said. "If they have a receipt where they actually purchased the tickets, then you know most likely they're real."
The sheriff's office said there's a lot you can do to not lose cash or a good ticket, like pay close attention to who you're dealing with.
"The person doesn't think to look at the car tag, description of the person or even ask for an ID, because sometimes if you say, 'Can I see your ID?' maybe the person will back off and not want to sell you the tickets because they know it's a scam," Bujeda said.
