State Fines Unlicensed Contractors

Handymen Not Licensed To Do Work Fined $2,500, Cited For Misdemeanors

Some handymen who were offering to do work without the proper license are now facing fines after state regulators went looking for unlicensed contractors.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation partnered with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and rented a house.

Investigators contracted people advertising handyman services on Craigslist and had them come to the home.

When someone offered to do work they weren't licensed to do, they were brought to a mobile command post.

That's where investigators handed out $2,500 fines and cited them for misdemeanors.

Sgt. Timothy Robertson, of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, said homeowners can lose out if they hire unlicensed contractors.

If you'd like to check a contractor's license, you can do it on the state's Web site.
